Provides guidance for Consumer Division, supporting executive management on standard licensing transactions. Assists the Consumer Division in the development and testing of new licensing concepts; drafts and negotiates agreements around those concepts. Assists secondary internal clients, including the Professional Division and Research Division, on licensing and legal matters relating to intellectual property.
Manages the evolution of Dolby’s standard license agreement portfolio in response to new markets, laws, business environments, and Dolby IP policy. Acts as clearinghouse and liaison on organization policies and procedures.
Manages and directs corporate intellectual property policies to efficiently and effectively protect the corporate intellectual assets.
Identifies and develops meaningful relationships with key licensees and business organizations or trade organizations.
Develops objectives for and manages the Intellectual Property Licensing Group in alignment with the corporate and division objectives.
Essential Job Functions:
- Supervises the Intellectual Property Licensing Group by approving its work, using a solid understanding of intellectual property, international transactions, and Consumer Division IP policy.
- Works with the Consumer Division and IP Licensing Strategy Group in testing new licensing concepts and ideas, and supports its negotiation of commercialization agreements and selected transactions.
- Makes recommendations to executive management for tactics and strategies to normalize relations with entities claiming rights to participate in Dolby licensing programs, by outlining risks, economic impact, and intellectual property asset impact.
- Meets with prospective licensees locally and abroad to discuss details of and to negotiate newly proposed license agreements.
- Develops and delivers appropriate communications, e.g., presentations, reports, and guidelines, on current licensing structure and programs for internal training and use, as well as negotiation tools.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures to assure the smooth functioning and consistency of licensing transactions and the reporting of contracting activity and other appropriate considerations to comply with the requirements of a public company.
- Collects feedback on licensing structure and policies. Facilitates/moderates resolution of questions regarding operation of license agreements and licensing programs.
- Performs routine management duties such as hiring, training, performance management, counseling, policy implementation, employee relations, and budget management.
Requirements:
- Juris Doctorate with an emphasis in intellectual property; California State Bar certification.
- 10 years’ experience drafting and negotiating contracts at a law firm or in-house setting, with a significant portion of this experience in intellectual property licensing or general intellectual property corporate practice. Demonstrated experience managing a team of professionals. Exposure to international transactions and antitrust law desired.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in legal composition and proofreading. Critical attention to detail and legal research skills.
- Self-motivation and excellent organizational/scheduling skills. Ability to work successfully in a deadline-oriented, team environment with a diverse group of technical, business, and legal personnel.
- Familiarity with licensing in consumer electronics and personal computer area desirable.
